Where the Mushrooms Grow: Meet Two River Mushroom Company

Bayshore + Beyond

I bet you had no idea there is an organic mushroom farm in the middle of Monmouth County. Yep neither did I.

Meet Two River Mushroom Company. New Jersey's only organic mushroom farm. I had no idea what to expect when heading to the mushroom farm. Is it a greenhouse? Will there be huge tree logs with mushrooms growing off of them? Nope, not really.

I turned off the road in Tinton Falls + I pulled up to a small red house. I arrived at Two River Mushroom farm + was greeted by KC. He showed me around the farm which consists of two "fruiting rooms" where the mushrooms grow + a fridge that stores the picked mushrooms that are ready to head out to a local market or straight to your plate. That's it!

Turns out mushrooms aren't picky. They mainly require three things - humidity, temperature + CO2. The mushrooms grow on oak sawdust logs. It could take weeks to months for mushrooms to be ready for picking, but when they are ready to pick boy are they fresh, beautiful + delicious. I was struck by their beauty. Mushrooms to me are the fungi version of coral. I may have been in a small, dark fruiting room but these mushrooms reminded me of snorkeling in Honduras surrounded by the coral reef.

Two River Mushroom farm grows varieties I have never heard of like Phoenix Oyster, Pioppini, Shitake, Lions Mane, Reishi, Blue Oyster, Maitake, Chestnut + King Trumpet just to name a few. 250 pounds of mushrooms a week leave this farm! Their mushrooms head to restaurants right here in the Bayshore like Drew's Bayshore Bistro + Belford Bistro as well as beyond like Anjelica's Restaurant + Langosta Lounge. You can pick some up at markets like Sickles Market + the Asbury Park Bazaar located at the Whitechapel Projects in Long Branch.

KC shared some exciting news with me. Two River Mushroom will be expanding to a second location at Whitechapel Projects. They will be using a shipping container for their mushroom farm right there on the premises. The mushrooms will go from the fruiting room right to your plate. You cannot get fresher than that! You will even be able to check out the mushroom farm for yourself with plans to have educational events + more there.

Two River Mushrooms are a must try. You can enjoy the mushrooms in the comfort of your own home cooking up a delicious mushroom meal or try a dish at any of the local restaurants they supply to. Mangia!
