A little over two hour drive from the Bayshore lands you in the quaint town of Jim Thorpe. It is a Victorian town with its own vibe nestled in a gorge in the Poconos Mountains. Driving through downtown, I smiled + knew I was going to like this place.
We were greeted by the friendliest property manager Chad of the High Street Guest Houses. The High Street Guest House properties range from a log cabin in the trees, to a modern + fully relaxing home with multiple residences, + an 1840's Queen Anne historic property. It is perfectly situated, a short 5 minute walk into town. They host happy hours in the summer, have trails behind the property, disc golf + a fire pit to enjoy outside. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay for my first trip to Jim Thorpe + I plan to stay there for all my future visits.
We headed into town + stopped for lunch at the Marion Hose Bar. We got a few appetizers, burger + a spicy bloody Mary to start our mini vacay off right. We walked around downtown to window shop, check out the cute shops + enjoy the historic vibe.
We made our way to the train station where we watched the train head off on its journey around the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway. Luna was’t into a train ride + I wasn’t mad about it because I would rather save the ride for when the scenery is at its peak. Also, I don’t know if they are there every weekend but shout out to the Italian pastry tent outside the train station. We got delicious San Giuseppe Zeppoli’s + “the best” cannoli Mike has ever had.
I needed my 3PM coffee pick-me-up so we stopped into Muggles' Mug, a Harry Potter themed coffee shop with a magical vibe + Harry Potter playing on loop. We strolled around town some more + enjoyed the beautiful, almost Spring day. I had grand plans for dinner, either Moya or Myst, but Mother Nature rained on our parade + we decided to order some take out.
Next morning we woke up bright + early, headed straight to Donerds Donuts for absolutely delicious donuts + a nitro brew I am currently still craving. Donerds Donuts, owned by Andrew and Annabel, serves fantastic fresh craft donuts. It was hard to decide but we got cannoli, strawberry, blueberry cheesecake, nutella + my personal favorite banana creme brulee. I highly recommend stopping into Donerds Donuts if you visit Jim Thorpe, whether for breakfast, a quick donut snack or for a nitro brew pick me up.
Jim Thorpe is outdoor activity central. There are easy D+L Canal trails right behind the train station that we headed to. Depending on the seasons there is white water rafting, biking, hiking, a lake with a beach just a ten minute drive from High Street Guest Houses + more.
We just got a taste of Jim Thorpe + I will definitely be heading back to enjoy more of the outdoor adventures that Jim Thorpe has to offer. Whether you decide to take a day trip or spend a weekend away, add Jim Thorpe to your list of places that are a quick road trip away.
